Managing I-Pod shuffle

When I connect my i-pod shuffle, the device shows up as sync "Joe's I-pod". If you click this it automatically syncs and there is no option to click "Music" and choose any other options listed in the user guide. ie(Select "Sync music," then choose "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres." or "Automatically fill free space with songs." Or user guide says to sync automatically, in iTunes, select iPod Shuffle in the list of devices, then click Summary. Deselect "Manually manage music". Click Apply. the update begins automatically. Again there is no "Summary" to click, nothing to deselect and no "apply".

All of this appeared the first time I connected the i-pod shuffle to my computer but now it seems all I can do is charge the battery. When I click sync "Joe's i-pod" almost immediately "i-pod sync is complete" appears at the top of itunes window.

This is a 4-th generation i-pod shuffle which i have two identical ones.

I recently updated from Tiger OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8, on a 1.83 Intel Core Duo I-Mac, 2 GB memory, I-tunes v11.0.1.

Any help you can gives is appreciated.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 1.83ghz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB 667 Mhz Ram,Airport Extreme, Buil
