iOS 6.1 Battery Drain Problem

I have noticed an increased amount of draining from my iPhone 4, ever since the new iOS 6.1 was released yesterday morning. I have only used minor iMessaging and my battery has seemed to drop a percentage every two minutes or so just in standby. It is sad to say that the Battery Bugs have not been removed and this problem needs to be resolved. Who else is experiencing drainage?

I update my 4S from 6.1 to 6.1.2 last night through iTunes (not OTA). After that I did reset all setting. Now it has 68% battery with 2hrs 18minutes usage and 20hours and 1minute standby.

Siri is off (I turn it only when using it)

Mail set to fetch

Automatic date set to off

location service only on to certain apps

iCloud sync is on to most of apps except passbook and safari

I can say 6.1.2 much better than 6.1.

I think apple did fix the problem with iOS 6.1.2. But there are still other problems. I am using an iPhone 5 with a network that do not support lte. I only use wifi for my Internet needs which is just a couple of minutes to an hour at most. I mainly use the phone for calls & text. My usage on my work day is 4+ hours and 16+ hours standby. I had double that before updating to iOS 6.1. Since today is Sunday, I don't get a lot of calls. So I noticed that my battery actually lasts longer. I think iPhone 5 needs to receive the iOS 6.1.1 update made for iPhone 4S because it targets the network issues. I think this is a network issue that is draining the battery. Here in the Philippines only two networks were given licenses to offer iPhone. I use the third network which is unsupported. I bought my phone from another country so there is no support here. I think I will just wait for the new update as I have done everything.

Restoring a backup made while the problem already existed is indeed likely to restore the issue as well. A restore from a pre-problem backup is much likely to do that. It's a pity that iTunes doesn't make it easy to keep a number of backups, but that doesn't mean it's impossible, either using something like TimeMachine, or by archiving the backup directory one self.

FYI and FWIW :

So I went ahead and updated yesterday, after making a backup (and a backup of the backup) and doing a reboot. I also switched off my exchange and hotmail email accounts during the update process, and only switched them back on after SysStatsLite told me my cpu idle had gone back to over 96%.

Initial impression was that battery life was maybe a bit better than before.

Kept the 4S on a dock overnight, and since about 3h I've been doing some questionnaires (with sound and images, no video), emailing, Flipboard and Skygrid surfing, updated an app and downloaded 2 others. Battery is now down to 72%, which appears a bit low for what I'm used to ... but it's so easy to be influenced by all the reports here. The phone has been on (unlocked) for about 1h45 now, with only Mail, Settings in the background, and RadioOpt TrafficMonitor running in the foreground. Mobile data is off, but 3G and WiFi are on; cell signal strength is -105 (dB?). My only exchange account is set to fetch at 30min intervals.

CPU load has been under 0.2 for the last >15 minutes, but in those 1h45 there's been 1.5Mb downloaded and almost 200kB upload. Not sure who'se been doing that, nor if it's more than before the update (sadly I didn't think of monitoring before).

After the update 6.1.1 (which i did over myhousehold wifi) all my devices (2xipad 2, 1x ipad 3,1 x iphone 5 and 1 x ipad mini) encountered extremely poor battery life. They would burn through charge over the course of 5 hours and no matter what i turned off or how manyntimes i resarted nothing resolved the problem.

Forums told me that this was a common problem with the update and 6.1.2 promised resolution. I updated. it didn't change anything.

I popped into the apple store and they told me that it is entirely possible that during he wifi update that the firmware and o/s can decelop a bad relationship and cause this problem. The solution, to connect the device to itunes, backup the image, perform a DFU boot and reinstall the update, restore the firmware and restore your backed up image.

So far all my devices are behaving normally, charged my ipad 3 overnight and at the end of day i till had 95% charge left. Ahhh, thats better.

The advice is to not update over wifi but update through USB to Itunes, a bit of a backward step but hey, rather that then battery life that lasts 6 hours.

Hope this helps you.

After 2 weeks of having the battery drain issue (fail to resolve the issue even tried all the methods discussed here), my battery start to giving problem. The phone will auto shut off even the battery indicator shown 6-8% of battery life left. I believe the frequent charging of the phone due to battery drain have shorten the battery life!!

I am not sure any other user facing the similar problem as mine?

My crash report. If the problem repeats and there is no update soon to repair problems I return my IPhone 5. I am tired with the continuous problems and today the total battery drain that made useless my alarm clock has been the last straw.

Trying the steps above fixed the problem for me, thanks (not sure which exact one worked).

As a first-time iPhone user I find the whole situation very curious. Here is a software update which actually created the very problem it was supposed to fix, so from having no battery problem I immediately went to having a severe problem. That is bad enough but then to have absolute silence from Apple on this issue which is affecting hundreds of users seems unforgivable - users get thrown into the role of 17th century empirical scientists just trying things out almost at random to see what will happen with no knowledge of the underlying mechanism. My experience with other software vendors has been, in retrospect, much better than this.

Mar 6, 2013 2:09 AM in response to ZAPELECTRIFIED

The problem seems to be entirely network related. I turned off practically everything that might cause a problem in 6.1.2.: icLoud, Wifi, don't have LTE with my carrier, notifications, etc. etc., practically everything was on manual. Stopped the background processes.

Phone lasted 100 percent battery life for about an hour with idle time, making one phonecall of about 5 minutes, and surfing. Then it dropped 1 percent. This was between 07AM and 08AM.

With the surfing and the emails, I left both running in the background, and that's all that changed. It's now 11AM and my battery is at 84 percent. So instead of the 1 percent drop in the first hour, I got a 13 percent drop in 3 hours. So about 400 percent more battery drain just by having facebook and email open.

I am assuming if you have a couple of other sync'ing things open or a few apps on the network, or you just use wifi, like most people, you will drain in 4-5 hours.

Keeping the above in mind, this doesn't seem to be a battery problem, it's entirely an iOS problem.
