Mail will not open.

I came back fro ten days holiday and Mail will not open. It tells me that my version of mail is not compatible with computer version OS X 10.6.8 How can I get mail to open ? Do I have to reinstall Mail? If so how? Basic instructions please

iMac (20-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.7.4)
