Trying to restore my ipod 5th Generation.Keeps saying Ipod server could not be contacted.

I replaced the battery in my 80GB Ipod 5th generation. This was my daughters and originally configured for a Mac. I reformatted the unit. If connected to Itunes it says the Ipod needs restored. Everytime I hit the Restore Ipod Icon it will come back and say Ipod server could not be contacted. I have tried to make this contact over the last 3 days. I am connected to the internet.
