My thunderbolt creates major lag issues when connected to my macbook pro, Any known reasons?

Hey, i have come across this issue that when my thunderbolt display 27" is connected to my early 2011 Macbook pro... That after 4-5mins the fans begin to pick up speed and a really bad surging lag begins. This happens while playing a game like WoW or something. My macbook pro alone works completely fine by itself on its internal display with no lag issues at all... As soon as its running from my thunderbolt display, Lag. I have also tried reseting the SMC like mentioned by some one else. Still no fix
