Can't use Mail for gmail pop (see details)

I have spent the last twi days trying to get Mail configured for Pop and have succeeded as far as i can tell. The Account is filled out as ll the "help" indicates including slection of pop.gmail.com and I did use the option key for continue aand selection of pop.

But, that said, and having done this for three of my accounts .. Click take all accounts online and the gear turns incessantly but finally get the ~ indicating not online or noit connected.

I have checked and rechecked both the gmail which does receive the emails and the Mail accounts which DO NOT.

I really need to use POP instead of IMAP and have been able to with a cable account and with att.net (yahoo).

I would most sincerely appreciate your help. I did help several otheres by telling them of the use of the Option keu to gt past the Create and default imap.

As stated in 3rd paragraph, I have repeatedly checked both gmail (that is working and receiving mail at the server) and Apple mail on iMac. The error message says "can't identify pop.gmail.com as legitimate server."

I have no idea how to change that. .. BUT, both iPhone and iPad work just fine .. go figure. :-?

Open terminal, at the prompt type ping pop.gmail.com, if it replies the server is working.

Reponse was a lengthy but not meaningful reple ending in [-z tos} mcast-group

I am able to gt the accounts working on my Macbook, iPad and iPhone, so something is wrong with the 2011 27" iMac.

I have checked the set ups so many times I find it hard to believe i missed something, but will go at it again.

Any ideas?

Really appreciate your help, you obviously are qualified.

PS: I've talked with Applecare but they say it is a gmail problem and ....

Gmail say it's Apple? that's the normal pair 🙂

At this stage I would be considering reinstallation of OSX, some thing is clearly not working right and reinstallation is generally faster than troubleshooting.

and would appreciate your opinion of 10.8. aince 10.6. 8 some of the "changes" haven't helped, in my case. They seem to just tinker.

I don't like all of the changes, but I do like enough to prefer 10.8 to 10.6, I have had no performance issues with any machine so there was only minimal downside for me, not all have had the same experience as far as I can see.

Some of the cosmetics is not to my taste, but it's cosmetic.

Gotcha, I tend to leave things that work alone although this mess I have just been in is a result of thinking i would be better served by switching to a "neutral" email server.
