Notice on My MacBook Pro says "Carrier Update…"

When I turned on my MBP tonight and opened iTunes, there was a messege that said some like "there is a Carrier Update. would you like to download and install..." I did not see anything on my iPhone. I looked for a number on all of the icons but there was none. I went into Settings----General----About and down to Carrier, but there was nothiong there (just the number from the last Carrier Update).

I called Verizon and asked if there was a new Carrier Update for the iPhone 5. the agent told me to install the carrier update. I was more interested in finding out if there was a carrier update and if so what it was.

In reading the Support article from clicking "Learn" on the pop up window that said there was a carrier update, it said that a carrier update can come from apps like Maps, Stocks, etc. but it did not mention anything about a carrier update coming from the company one has their service from.

Is this something I should click to download and install on my MacBook Pro even know I can't find any notice about a Carrier Update on the iPhone?

iPhone 5, iOS 6

Yep that is the article. I thought it was interesting that in that article is mentions nothng about a Carrier Update being from one's service provider. (unless I missed it), and that it states, "If your iPhone is using iOS 4 or earlier, follow these instructions:" but it has no instructions for iOS 6. I realize it is generally pretty simple, but it is odd that I see no notice on my iPhone, just on iTunes.

it is possible to do updates without connecting the iphone to the computer, right? I do have a WiFi connection

...

Are you sure? Right at the beginning:

Carrier settings updates are small files (about 10 kb) that are installed on your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular models). Carrier settings include updates to Access Point Names (APNs), MMS settings, features such as tethering, and default apps such as Stocks, Maps, and Weather. You might receive notifications periodically about installing a carrier-settings update.

Since for example APNs, MMS, tethering, etc. are all carrier features, so why do you think it's not from one's service provider?

I did get the Carrier Update about 4 months ago but this is a current happening--like today.

I thought the article would have mentioned that Carrier Updates can be a small file from your service provider. Verizon has nothing to do with the Map or Stock apps. Also it does not tell one how to install in the article after

"If your iPhone is using iOS 4 or earlier, follow these instructions:" My iPhone is using iOS 6 which is LATER then iOS 4.

Ckuan-

I did read it as you can see in my post above. However, randers4 said "some time ago." I got a Carrier update from Verizon about 4 months ago, but I am talking about today. This is all current not a carrier update some time ago. it is just od that it does not show up on my iPhone but it shows on my MBP.

do not get me going about Verizon and data useage.

eric-

Not sure what you mean by "The moment the phone (or iPad for that matter) hits that screen it will download and update your carrier settings." I am assuming you are saying even know there is not a notoice that I need to update to the latest Carrier setting, just by opening Settings, and going to the area where it has the latest carrier version, if there is a new one it will download it. In the past I have always received a notice on my phone so it is just odd that I got a Carrier update notice on itunes but not on the phone. Verizon does not know but I see that it did update to 14.1 and it was at 14 before, so it did update.

Steve-

Usuall if you do a soft restart you will get the cell signal back. I think it is best to usually restart your iPad after a carrier or OS update. That has worked bedt for me when I have done so.

NObodE - thanks for the reply. I tried to restart the iPad and no luck. I force updated the settings again (http://www.macworld.com/article/1143088/carriersettings.html), and still no luck. When I go to Settings -> About my Carrier says Verizon 14.1, but my PRL says 1 - from what I have seen elsewhere this should be a 5-digit number.

Is there a way to force-download a new copy of the file from Apple?
