Ipod issues in transferring files

Hi there- My hard drive crashed, had to got get a new one. Thought I could sync my Ipod back on to Itunes library. Apparently that's a no go. Any ideas of how to get my Itunes library loaded again? Most of the songs in the library were not purchased from Itunes.
