After receiving the prompt to update my software on my iPad 3 Retina, I plugged the iPad into the charger and began the software update. A few seconds later, everything went black and the plug into iTunes icons appeared. I think this is called the recovery mode screen.

I tried plugging into iTunes on my iMac, but it wants me to restore the ipad and I will lost all of my apps and content. What the **** is going on here???

Why cant Apple make a **** software update that JUST WORKS???

Can anyone please help...

The exact same thing just happened to my 4S. Broken update means I lose a bunch of photos from the last few days... that I really need!

Its absolutely imperative you make new backups of your data before updating any software for the above reasons, alone.

You will nomt looseany of your purchased content fomr the itunes/app stores though. You can redownload them directly on the device after restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

If a recent backup contains the data you want, just restore from said backup.

Ultimatley, things can go bad, its all human created afterall. Next time, take the time to cover yourself.
