Q: My iphone 5 suddenly died.

My iphone 5 suddenly died. It will not turn on when I plug it in. It was working well the night before and nothing happened to it over night.  The battery was charged.

Error 3194 is described here: Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

It means one of the following:

    • You are attempting to restore a version of iOS other than the current version (7.1.1), Downgrading is not supported.
    • Your phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it or for other purposes.
    • You have used your computer to hack or jailbreak this or some other iOS device, and the hacking program corrupted the network database on your computer.
    • Your firewall or antivirus is blocking access to Apple's servers

This just happened to me today.  Phone was 80% charged.  Went totally dead.  .  I was on a hike and using the camera feature from the lock screen (without logging in first)... a bit unusual for me.  That's it.   Thought it might have been the screen, so tried to call it (nothing happened), and tried to plug in to iTunes.. (phone didn't even register).   Read the solutions here and they worked:  Toggled "silence" button 4 times or so, then pressed Home and Power buttons at the same time and Apple icon appeared.   Very scary.  Apple, please deal with this, thank you ~

There's nothing for Apple to deal with. And Apple doesn't read these forums. iOS crashed, and you rebooted the phone. Are you surprised that computers sometimes crash?

    You've misunderstood this thread Lawrence.

This isn't a reboot.  Ordinary rebooting does not work.

When this happened to me,  I tried repeatedly holding down the Home / Power buttons and my phone never began a reboot.  Dead black screen.

It was only until I found this thread and read that I need to toggle the Mute button a few times and THEN attempt a reboot, did my phone come back to life.

Since this is now something that has happened independently to many, and since this is a bizarre fix, I do think Apple should look into it.

Thank you RJM! My 5s worked the night of 7/9, and was dead the morning of 7/10. Plugging it in and pushing buttons/ toggling the ringer switch independently did nothing. I have a new software update available, but did not have the chance to install it yet (though it sounds like people have had this problem both before and after the update). I keep the phone almost all the time in a "Life-Proof" case (I might think it overheated, but I was not using it before or when it died). I toggled the ringer switch 4 times, then held both buttons as suggested, and it turned on again (with dead battery, so it just flashed the "plug in" image). Now it seems to be behaving normally.

Does anyone think this is something to be concerned about in the future? The phone is new and still under warranty. Maybe I need to exchange the phone if it's a defect that might keep occurring in the future? Or get worse as the phone ages?

Thanks!!!  I have been freaking out and clueless as to what happened.  I did notice that my volume button was turned with the orange showing???  Tried the trick you found from your Google search and it freakin' worked!!!!  Genius!!! Not Apple though!  This is my second I-phone 5 since Jan of this year.  My first one had to be replaced by insurance exactly a month after getting it.  I have had my current one since Feb. and was preparing to go through the ordeal of getting another one!!!  Now I'm scared that at any moment it might happen again.  Thanks for the help!!!!

This worked for me too - at first nothing, but about 20-30 seconds later the screen suddenly activated and everything was fine. Amazing! You deserve a Nobel Prize or something for this RJM.

    Thanks RJM,

Those 2 steps really worked for me. Don't know if toggling silent button helps but pressing Home and Lock button together and holding for few seconds (like 10 seconds ) did showed up the apple logo and after that the things were normal.

In my case the phone had become a little warm while it was getting charged although this happens almost all time I charge my phone.

    Whoaaa!!! same here!

I had also tried the reset and it didn't work.  the following method from RJM worked like magic:)

    • Toggle the "silent button" above the volume rocker back and forth 2 times
    • Press the home button and also the sleep button at the same time. the apple logo will appear right after.

It worked!!! thank you so much! My phone just suddenly died - fully charged overnight, worked in the morning and died on the way to the gym. Weird. I hope it does not happen again.

    Thanks again!

    WOW!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The alarm on my iPhone 5s went off this morning and I hit snooze as I always do.  I then woke up like a shot later thinking "hold it, what time is it? I never heard my alarm again?!"   It was almost an HOUR later and my iPhone was DEAD.  I was certain it was fully charged and had just put it on snooze last use.

I tried everything. I had not dropped it, it has an Otterbox case so it's pretty darn protected.  I came here, found these directions:

    • Toggle the "silent button" above the volume rocker back and forth 2 times
    • Press the home button and also the sleep button at the same time. the apple logo will appear right after.

    THEY WORKED FOR ME TOO!

Now, I am going to be puzzled as to what on Earth can cause a 5s to suddenly do this.  I have had no problems at all with the phone before this morning.
