Aug 24, 2014 9:06 AM in response to RJMby hanhan79,thanks rjm. it works perfectly. my iphone 5s suddenly died. im quite sure not the battery problem. cause i just fully charger a few hours before and i didnt use it for several hours. so when it died, a bit worry and try your suggestion and it works perfectly. but its weird why can be like that. i tried press power and home button at the same time, and it doesnt work. so i try your suggestion, play the silent/ring toggle 2 times after that press power and home button and it works like a charm. thanks...

Aug 24, 2014 9:29 AM in response to hanhan79by Ryan Healey,I posted earlier in this thread to thank people for a solution.
Sadly, my 5s has done this AGAIN. It was fully charged and all was well. I return to it and it's "dead". The only thing that brings it back is the "power/home" combination discussed earlier and then the phone is fine again. After having no problems at all with my 5s since it came out and I purchased it, I have now had this happen randomly twice in a week.
I have two major concerns here:
1. These units are somehow defective and this problem will escalate.
2. This (like for so many) is my alarm clock. I happened to wake up the first time before it was too late. How can I rely on this if the phone may shut down once a week in the middle of the night?
Now that this has happened twice I am glad I know how to resolve it but growing more concerned this is a greater problem.
Thoughts?

Aug 28, 2014 8:42 PM in response to myiphoneisgoldenby JMJIN,I had same problem with my iphone 5s. I tried RJM's method and it did not work.
I am using an Otterbox defender case. The case seals the iphone well and may trap moisture.
I removed the Otterbox case and used a hair dryer to blow on the iphone for 30 seconds.
I pressed the home and sleep buttons. It worked. I wonder how many other people have such problems with Otterbox cases.

Aug 28, 2014 8:45 PM in response to Ryan Healeyby gail from maine,Do you have any 3rd party apps (i.e., not purchased in the iTunes Store) on the device? Or has it been jailbroken?
Cheers,

Aug 29, 2014 2:19 PM in response to myiphoneisgoldenby HofstraJet,As others have mentioned, the difference between this and a Windows BSOD is that there is no feedback telling you the OS crashed. It looks like a dead battery, but when plugged in to charge while in this state, the iPhone draws no current and does not charge (just happened to me and before I found this thread I wanted to see if it was a dead battery but the phone drew no power when plugged into a charger). I thought maybe the battery failed, but once I did the home/sleep button hold, the current meter twitched and it started charging and was rebooting a moment later.
Anyway, if anyone from Apple reads this, a screen telling me that the OS crashed or some other signal would be helpful instead of just a device that looks bricked.
Thanks!

Aug 30, 2014 8:45 PM in response to myiphoneisgoldenby doodooman,My iPhone 4S was dead, what a shock to the system. So I did a search and found the post above and it worked?! My god what was that all about!?
- Toggle the "silent button" above the volume rocker back and forth 2 times
- Press the home button and also the sleep button at the same time. the apple logo will appear right after.

Sep 24, 2014 6:44 PM in response to RJMby stephenpeter,I am having the same problem. I would toggle the silent switch and press home + power button, however my power button does not work..
Is there anything else I can do?

Sep 24, 2014 6:45 PM in response to myiphoneisgoldenby gdgmacguy,Charge the phone from the wall for 15 minutes, then perform a reset: hold the on/off switch and home button down simultaneously until the Apple logo appears (about 40 seconds)

Sep 28, 2014 9:42 AM in response to RJMby leonefromqld,OKay, this has actually happened on my Ipad before and similar has worked, however my daughters IPod 5 died at 7 months and Apple Genius could not get working and she had to have replaced.
The same thing has just happened 13 weeks into a brand new one. Have not tried this workaround as she is in a different state ATM.
Be interesting to see if that fixes it this time as replacement Ipod did not come with the normal 12 months warranty Apple states when one of their products is defective, was advised and written on this site that warranty ends in December 2014 as that is when original 12 months is up. Can't hurt to give it a go and cannot find anything under Ipod 5 dying. Thanks FYI
