MDD freezing problem after 12 minutes like clockwork

I decided to repost this problem as no one has had my exact issue.

My G4 MDD freezes after 12 minutes like clockwork.

I have tried repairing permissions,and although it says permissions have been repaired they have not.

When I re-run repairs I get the same issues every time.

Can anyone understand this this?

Running Leopard? Unrepaired "repaired" permissions are as normal as the sunrise with Leopard.

freezes after 12 minutes like clockwork.

Initial boot?

Every subsequent boot?

What are the processor temps?

The computer freezes every time it's booted or rebooted. So basically I get 12 minutes of computer time before I have to reboot due to the system locking up.

I have Temperature Monitor installed so I know the computer never overheats. In fact the temps are very low when the computer freezes. However, if I do a fresh install the computer runs for hours before it freezes. Then it's back to 12 minutes freeze, 12 minutes freeze, etc.

Do a Safe boot (depress the Shift key at startup) and see if you also get the same 12 minute freeze. Safeboot also "fixes" some problems.

Do you have any anti-virus or internet security software installed? Is any third-party backup software installed. specifically software that comes bundled with an external hard drive?

The permissions issues are not usually diagnostic. Repairing permissions in 10.5 throws out a lot of garbage results that does not necessarily mean you have a problem.

Finding something that happens at boot+12 is more likely found in system.log. Find System Profiler in Macintosh Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities and launch it. From the left-hand "Contents" pane, select "Logs" under the "Software" section:

Post a recent section of the log and perhaps we can find a culprit.

Thank you for responding I really appriciate the help. This thing is driving me nuts,

I've tried safe boot. I have even booted from my OS install disk and DiskWarrior same thing happends.

I'm no genius when it comes to reading logs, but that rules out one prime suspect I saw in the log:

If you boot from an optical disk, there should be no extension call, yet the results are the same. I take it you have an SATA controller card installed?

This could be a problem:

Disconnect all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard and see if the computer runs longer. That line could portend an issue with an external USB device or a hub.

While we're at it, can you please fully describe your MDD, including any mods like overclocking, and any additional hardware like PCI cards or hard drives. This is just crazy enought that we need to know as much as possible.

I also saw that one. There is definitely something connected or system USB related that is not cooperating.

I use the MDD to stream iTunes purchases to my 3rd gen Apple TV.

I have a Dual 1 GHs MDD with 1.75 gig of RAM. (Dual boot) Not overclocked.

It has two internal drives on the 100Mgz buss. One has OS 10.4.11 the other has 10.3 and OS 9.2.2 installed from the original disks that came with the computer.

The computer has a eSATA card with internal and external SATA ports AND a 133MHz ATA port. The external port is the only port used on that card connecting an external (SATA/FW800/400/USB 2) 1 Gig hard drive that is used only for iTunes storage. (I have purchased A LOT of HD movies and HD television from iTunes.)

The Mac is connected to my home network (Comcast HS internet) AirPort Base Station w/AirPort Express to extend wirless network.

Long ago, an accidental kick to the Ethernet cable cracked the housing that holds the Ethernet cable to the motherboard. The port still works if you hold the connector just right but the housing is too loose so the port can no longer be used.

I installed a 10/100/1000 Ethernet card as a result of the broken port. It works brilliantly. I pulled the old Apple wireless card as it was useless for streaming high definition movies.

The computer has a USB 2 card with four external ports and one internal port. I use the internal port to connect an aftermarket USB Bluetooth adapter. The adapter allows me to use my Apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse.

I used this computer for many years as my main system.

I decided to reconfigure the system for iTunes streaming.

Before my original post:

Booted with internal 10.4.11 drive.

After 12 minutes

I really didn't care because I had to install Leopard in order to use the correct version of iTunes to stream to my AppleTV.

I did a clean install of OS 10.5 on an external FireWire drive and updated the software to 10.5.8

I booted from the external FireWire drive which has the fresh install.

After 12 minutes

I connected a wired USB Apple keyboard and mouse to the built-in USB port.

I disconnected everything from the USB 2 card but have not pulled it.

I pulled a three port FireWire 800 card that at one time was used for my external iTunes hard drive.

Reboot with external 10.5.8 drive.

After 12 minutes

I replaced the battery on the motherboard.

I hit the reset button located on the motherboard.

I reset the P-ram

I used DiskWarrior to clean up preferences and check the boot drive.

Reboot with external 10.5.8 drive.

After 12 minutes

I installed "applejack". Applejack would freeze when attempting to correct permissions on the external OS 10.5.8 system drive. Using the test suites individually I was able to check everything except permissions. I also used the program to check and test the RAM. It passed.

Reboot with external 10.5 drive.

After 12 minutes

I disconnected the FireWire external 10.5 drive and the SATA external iTunes storage drive.

Applejack operated perfectly on the internal OS 10.4.11 system drive. It was able to test every system and was even able to correct permissions.

Reboot with internal 10.4.11 drive with nothing else attached.

After 12 minutes

Great info--lots to chew on but it's my bedtime. However:

The computer has a USB 2 card with four external ports and one internal port.

Look at the card and see what is printed on the largest chip. I'm hoping it says "NEC"

The chip on the USB card is "NEC".

I really don't know how this solved my problem, but I removed the internal drives leaving the computer empty inside with only the external 10.5.8 FW drive (boot) and the SATA drive with my iTunes media on it.

The computer is running perfectly now with no hangs. HD movies and HD television shows stream very fast.

The internal drives passed all tests that were recommended. Could it be a Master/Slave issue? Nether drive has jumpers.

NEC is good. That should eliminate the USB PCI card as a culprit.

MDDs should use "cable select" for PATA/IDE drives. I've not messed much with SATA but I don't think they rely on master/slave setting. However, there is something to do with SATA speed that limits older Macs to a slower transfer rate with some drives.

I hope japamac hops back in on this issue. He is good; he is wise. And he knows SATA
