Q: I want to stream music from my mac pro itunes to my iphone

I have posted this elsewhere and after 8 days I haven't gotten a nibble. Sorry for the cross post...

I am looking for a way to stream music via the internet from my Mac to my iPhone. I am definitely not looking for a cloud solution and I am not looking to download the music onto my iPhone.  Audiogalaxy worked very well for this and in spite of a few UI idiosyncrasies it gave me access to my iTunes library and any other music in multiple formats I had on a shared drive very easily and dependably.  The performance via my cellular network was very good.  AudioGalaxy has been sold to Dropbox and support for AG has been terminated.  I try not to use orphaned solutions if I can so does anyone out there have a good repalcement?  There are quite a few "sort of" solutions out there but I would like to find something that has been thouroughly vetted by the brain trust here and "just works".  I would rather not cobble together a bunch of extra hardware.  I would like a Mac based server/ iPhone app situation. I am ideally looking for a way to stream music stored on my Mac to my iPhone and use my iTunes library WITHOUT having iTunes running 24/7.

I find many variations on this theme but nothing that addresses this so far. Sorry if this has been asnswered in the past.

TIA,

Pete

The solutions most people use for this are either Match or sharing over a VPN, but the first is a cloud service and the second requires iTunes to be running.

Both of these are ruled out by your criteria.

I believe the VLCStream might work for this, but you again, you may need to set up a VPN (not sure).

    Hi,

I just installed StreamToMe and I'm testing it to see if it is bulletproof. It can access my iTunes library, my iTunes playlists without iTunes running as well as music files that are elsewhere on my computer. It's working so far on my home WiFi and I need to test it "out in the wild" over cellular. I just can't see uploading all of my "stuff" to another server just to access what I already have.  Just seems inefficient to me. If I just walk away from my (always on) computer I don't want to be "shut out" of accessing my music just because I did not start iTunes before I walked away.  In the long run I hope to set up a NAS that will access iTunes and other music files and I can even turn off the computer and not be shut out from my "stuff".  I'm not quite there yet.

    UPDATE:

I have been stress testing StreamToMe in the house and  "out in the wild" and it is working very well.  There are one or two clunky steps in order to switch from the in-my-house wifi to the cellular network but it's just better (to me) than uploading about 750 GB of music that is restricted by iTunes rules and limitations to "the cloud".   The major advantage is that this solution plays more file formats than iTunes will.  In addition, I can access music files anywhere on my mac - even if they are not in my iTunes library. Playlists from iTunes are available, too.

I am not associated with this company in any way.  I am astounded that there are not more solutions available and that there are not more people discussing this issue.  Subscription models like Spotify are great and the cloud is fine for those that don't have large libraries  But when I have a humongous library and I don't want to move it around up and down to someone else's server or pay to access it after I have already paid for it I find the lack of ease of doing this baffling.

I hope that this info can help someone looking for information relating to this type of solution...

I'm in the same place as you. I can't believe this hasn't been tackled efficiently by the big boys. When I realized that iTunes Match had to download the files to my iPhone before it would play them, I canceled the service immediately. That just doesn't make since to me. If I can stream mainstream music flawlessly through Spotify & Pandora or even stream mixtapes thru low-rent apps like MyMixtapez, why can't I stream my own library using the same technology? I don't mind the uploading my library to a cloud as long as I can stream it with the same ease as I would any internet radio station. I will definitely try StreamToMe. Thanks for the post.
