I have the exact same problem, and I haven't tried it, but I hope it works. Was your Ipad jailbroken?

I had the exact same problem and after much frustration and searching I found a solution that work. The only difference in my procedure is i see you have an iMac and I have a Windows machine but I think it will work the same once you determine the correct ipsw file to get.

I found this website that has all of the restore files for the iProducts which are lined to the Apple server that hosrs them:

Mine was trial and error because there were three different files for the iPad 2. but after the third I got it to work.

So what I did was download the file to my PC. Then I moved the file to:

\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates on my laptop. For Windows users you will have to set the option to see hidden files. Not sure how it works on a Mac or what the location is.

Then I went through the restore procedure again in iTunes. After plugging the iPad in itunes told me I needed to do a restore. So I clicked on OK and then pressed (again for Windows machines) "shift" while clicking on the Restore button in iTunes. it will then ask you to find the ipsw file location. find the file and select it. If you downloaded the correct firmware version for your iPad for 6.1 then it should work. If not you'll get an error saying the firmware is not compatible in which case delete the ipsw file and download one of the others and start the restore procedure again.

On you get the right one and it starts to restore you can then restore your other apps and things through icloud. Good luck!

Folks, there are many threads on this board tracking the same issue with the corrupted file error received upon ios 6.1 upgrade for iPad 2 users. I have an iPad 2 with 6.0.1 that I tried to update to 6.1. The process completely "bricked" my iPad. By reading this and a few other threads I deduced that the 6.1 update appears to be toxic for iPad 2s. It hasn't been fun, but I'm slowly getting back in action and this is how I did it (I'm on a Mac and I assume much of this will be similar for PC users):

1. I started by going to this web site to get the proper iOS file. http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ These updates are hardware specific and I had to experiement in downloading several until I found the correct one. Once downloaded from Safari I dragged the firmware files to my desktop.
2. I'm assuming that after failing to update your iPad that you'll see the "Connect to iTunes" on the screen. Go ahead and plug your iPad in and and iTunes should recognize it. You will then be asked to update and restore.
3. This is important: do not click the "update and restore" button. That will only repeat the download/firmware crash issue. Hold down the OPTION key and then click on update and restore. That will open a window that you can browse to the desktop where you put the firmware files. Choose the file you believe is the correct one for your iPad. I had to repeat this process 4 times, but when you do click on the correct version it will start the update process for the iPad.
4. Once the process is complete you should have 6.1 properly installed.
5. At this point you can restore from iCloud or your computer. Two years ago I switched to iCloud backup and I was frustrated that the message I got from the iPad was that there wasn't an iCloud iPad backup (which I have set up on all our iOS devices). :-( It's going to take a few hours to put everything right.

I've worked with Macs since 1985 and have to remind myself that software update problems like this one used to occur a lot more regularly. We've all gotten used to a much more stable software environment, but that's only a mild comfort for losing about 5 hours out of your day.

I have had the same problem with the IOS 6.1 update for IPad 2. I decided to do a manual update and downloaded iPad2,1_6.1_10B141_Restore.ipsw from a couple of places. It always arrived as iPad2,1_6.1_10B141_Restore.zip instead of .ipsw. It drove me crazy because when I unzipped it, there were no .ipsw files and these are what you need. Out of desperation, I changed the .zip in the file name to .ipsw and it worked flawlessly. Hallelujah!!!!!

Were you using Internet Explorer? There were a few that found that is what was creating the zip file. They switched to chrome and it worked fine.
