Preview - Highlighting Annotations Deleted or Hidden

Hi,

I highlighted an e-book quite a lot on 'Preview', I've definitely saved it but as soon as I quit preview and reopen it on a later date, the highlighting disappears. Is there anyway to recover this, or has it been permanently deleted?

Any help would be much appreciated
