creating albums in i photo
When I transfer pictures from photos in my library to albums I have created, why are they in the albums as well as still in the photo library?

The album is a "short cut" and does not actually contain the image. The image is in the Library. That is the original copy. If you delete it from the library, it will delete from the album, as it is a short cut.
You are not "transfering" anything - albums are logical otganizational tools - they contain pointers to photos and take no space - they are one way to view your photos - events is anothe - photos view is another - they are all looking at the same photos in your library - and deletion or change in any view is reflected in all other views of the photo

iPhoto works on the same principle as iTunes.
Everything is in the LIbrary.
Albums are a subset of the Library, and contain only links to the items in the Library - same as playlists in iTunes.
So, a photo can be in any number of Albums and waste no disk space.
