Looking for some guidance/assistance here. My question.. anyone out there know how to resolve this issue?
I upgraded this past Friday from 10.7.4 to 10.8.2. I had some issues with outlook launching upon completion of the upgrade and took to the forums to resolve my issue. I started with using Font Book and I removed the fonts that failed the validation. This resolved the Outlook startup issue but things began to go downhill from there. I did not remove the Arial font.
The fonts (more specifically Arial) appear to have odd darkened or blurred areas typically the vertical lines. FF or ff or T tend to display the problem well.
I am running XCode on the latest update.
I tried a number of suggestions including disabling and reenabling the font.
Turning off font smoothing
System Preferences --> General --> Unchecked use font smoothing
Cleared the font cache and also ran the following command in the terminal
defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 0
I ended up taking my mac over the the mac store and sitting down with a "genius". He said he couldn't see the issue .. much to my suprise I didn't really notice it either.. The difference .. I'm not totally sure except that I have two dell monitors at the office and I use them vs. the laptop lcd. I tried to show him what I was seeing prior to leaving the office. I decided to hook up the stores monitor via thunderbolt. The font issue just didnt appear to be the same and was IMO not nearly as noticeable so I decided to head back given my lack of free time.
I then hooked up my mac leaving the lcd open and set up the display preferences so that I had 3 screens. It was obvious to me that the problem much more noticeable on the Dell monitors. I was going to live with it for the day and get some work done. The WHAM... they system appeared to freeze. Not responding to any keys or mouse input I was forced to power it down by holding down the power button.
I took all the cables out of the mac including the power and power cycled the box. I got this awesome blue then white then gray then white then gray screen thing going on.
Tried power cycling numerous times to no avail.
Single user boot... command line options for fsck..no issues found
Safe boot would never load..
Ended up having to reinstall from Recovery.
Upon completion of reinstall I took a full Time Machine because I was able to and wasnt sure if my previous Lion backup contained all my work
Now I'm back with the same "facking" issue again.. and it is obvious while using the laptops display. I'm no longer connected to anything other than a power cord in an effort to reduce the many variables.
The disk and hardware display no issues via the system provided utilites. The logic board was replaced about 4 months ago after a USB port was dropping connections. There were no issues when running Lion.
Verify Disk, Verify Volume, Onxy scans all come back clean.
I'm an linux systems admin/engineer surrounded by others that have done installs of mountain lion and most are telling my to simply wack this install all together and do a clean install. I'm reluctant to do that given the many hours of time I have taken to install software ect. I will do it if need be but I'm afraid that might not really resolve the issue and would at least like to see what any of you have to say about it. I apologize if I have left anything out.. im tired and little stressed out.
