Q: My Ipad 2 is stuck in recovery mode after the update 6.1

Two days ago I heard of people around me the new update for the ipad2 is out so I went to settings checked if there was one and there was one. So I clicked on download and so it went on it turned off after it and got stuck on the screen where you see you have to connect to itunes. I connected it to itunes and it said its in recovery mode. I clicked on recovory and fix it so it went downloading after 12 min maybe it was finished but came up with the error 1403 that the downloading was damaged and corrupted.... So I tried agin but I keep getting the same message and two days have gone by and still cant use my Ipad? Anyone else has this problem with his/her ipad 2? Anyone else who fixed it? Is apple working on it?

I was in the process of updating to version 8.1 when I realized the wifi wasn't connected.  I assumed it would take forever over cellular signal or not be able to at all so I hard killed it by holding down the home and top button.  Big Mistake.  Now my iPad mini which I use all the time for work is stuck in recovery mode and will not restore.  I get the error message "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad "iPad".  The network connection timed out.  Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."

Basically I followed the instructions on what to do in the tech link but no dice.  Just the above error message all 7 times I tried it.

    Anyone know of any solution?

I had the same problem with the last update.  I haven't downloaded 8.1 because of that.  Anyway, my iPad was restored through itunes but, it had to be done on a laptop that had the Ethernet connected to ensure the internet connection was not disrupted.  Wifi can go out in a second and you probably won't even notice.  Hope this helps.

Oh!  Yeah, it "timed out" several times. Prob because wifi paused like you said. I will try that. Thank you!

HHi tech madness, I have an iPad tthat I downloaded or tried to download the new 8.1 and now it is stuck in restored land. It starts the process of restoring gets about 75% done then as soon as it states on the computer installing firmware it stops and states iPad could not be restored an unknown error occurred and then back to conect to iTunes on the iPad screen . Can you please help if you can? Thanks a million . Danny

I've done the restore "fix", it does not work.  I bought my iPad just over 12 months ago, OS 8 messed it up completely.  My problem has been that the screen works intermittently and now does not display anything.  Also, iTunes reads the storage capacity as being all over the map; 11.7, then 14.91, then 9 gigs over capacity.

I had the same problem and the Apple Store fixed it in about 20 minutes.

I have an iPad 2 as well and experienced the same problems you decribe with the update but i finally found a solution that worked for me.

First, start itunes on your computer then you must follow these instructions to get the ipad shut down and then a recover start thru itunes, follow this link:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097

Second, once you accept the recovery and update option and it starts downloading the necessary data for the update, unplug the ipad from the computer. This will force itunes to finish downloading all the data without dumping anything onto the ipad yet. Also, shut down the ipad just like you did in the first step.

Third, itunes will tell you the recovery and update failed, say ok.

Fourth, plug the ipad back into the computer like normal don't hold down the home key like you did in step one, once itunes recognizes the ipad hit the recovery and update option again and it will finally start extracting the data and stop the loop from occuring on the ipad and the recovery and update will begin.

I hope this works for you, let me know if you need further explanation on any of these steps. also, let me know if it works out for you.

Why does your link show http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097 but take one to http://www.ipadconverter-mac.com/ipad-stuck-in-recovery-mode-after-update/ ?  That page asks you to do download a special program.  The site looks legit, but IMHO hiding the actual URL behind an Apple URL looks suspicious and warrants an explanation.

To what firmware fix does Techmadness refer?  I couldn't spot it in any previous posts!

After reading through 16 pages I have found the link that Apple removed.  I, like others, can't understand why Apple would remove advice that obviously has helped so many others.    This Discussion should now be renamed "My Ipad 2 is stuck in recovery mode after the update 6.1, as well as updates 7 & 8".  It's surprising to me that after all this time Apple has found a fix to the problem.  After successful updating both my and my wife's iPhones to 8.2, when I tried to do the same with my iPad 2, it got stuck.  I'm working through the various suggested fixes and will report my results.

My iPad 3 appeared to be dead one morning in Feb 2015, about 2.75 years after I had bought it.  It was fine the day before.  I thought maybe the AC adapter or charging circuit was bad, so plugged it in using a different adapter and cable.  No change.  Finally found that doing a reset (the sleep & home keys down for ~30 seconds) while plugged in to my MacBook Pro brought it to life, at least partially.  Apparently I was able to get it into recover mode, but I was never able to recover.  I tried with different cables and different computers.  I get the apple logo and a progress bar below it, and my iTunes will eventually say "waiting for iPad", but nothing appears in the progress bar no matter how long I wait.  Eventually iTunes reports an unknown error (9).  I took it to an Apple store to see a genius, but all she did was the same stuff I had tried to do.  She told me it must be the logic board and it would cost $299 to fix.  I was loath to pay that.  Instead I bought a new iPad mini, which is my preferred size anyway.  Now I still have the iPad 3 and I have this very slight hope that the genius was wrong and that there really is a way to fix the problem.  I am suspicious that anything just "broke" on its own while the iPad was sitting there in it's stand.  It could be, but it seems more likely that something happened via WiFi (hacked or updated or something) which has screwed up the firmware/software.  Anyway, I'm following this thread and hoping someone has some good ideas for me to try.
