Help Diagnosing Kernel Panics (MBP 8,2 on ML)

Hello all,

I'm hoping you can help me resolve these kernel panics on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. They occur regardless of whether or not there is any external hardware attached, so we probably can rule that out straight away. In fact, they primarily seem to occur when I use Safari. The last two kernel panics I encountered happened while I was inputting data into a text field. The system froze for about a second, then the screen went black, and then after rebooting itself I was treated to the "your computer restarted because of a problem" screen. The computer then started up normally and was perfectly functional until I tried using Safari again, some 35 minutes later. I got some usable time in the browser and then, once again, poof.

I've been using Chrome since (my default browser) with zero kernel panics. I use three extensions with Safari: AdBlock, LastPass, and Coda Notes.

I've captured the last two crash reports (from the kernel panics described above) and they're included below.

I've run a check with Rember on my RAM (although I only had time for a single run) and all tests passed successfully.

Thoughts?

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:

  1. A damaged OS X installation
  2. A fault in a peripheral device, if any
  3. Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
  4. An internal hardware fault
  5. An obscure bug in OS X

You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.

Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it as directed in this support article.

If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.

The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.

In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.

Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Thanks for the thorough reply, Linc. I tried removing the Safari extensions after I posted and was able to use the browser for a few hours but eventually the system kerploded again.

I'll try doing a full wipe/reinstall in a couple of weeks when I have some down time. That really doesn't sounds like much fun, but if it'll resolve the issue, it's certainly better than having to be without a computer for a few days, which I can't consider doing for at least a few months.

If there's an upcoming update to Mountain Lion, maybe that might resolve the issue. I'll update when I have news.

Some further observations on this issue, for my own records.

Kernel panics have occurred and reports have been sent as follows:

  • 25 January, 2013 (twice)
  • 30 January, 2013
  • 9 February, 2013
  • 14 February, 2013 (twice)
  • 17 February, 2013
  • 24 February, 2013
  • 26 February, 2013
  • 27 February, 2013

In all cases, the MacBook Pro crashed while it was being used without any peripheral hardware. The MBP is used at home with a wired Apple keyboard, Magic Mouse, and 24" Dell U2410 monitor and has never crashed in that configuration.

Crashes seem to occur when using:

  1. Safari
  2. Chrome

Other apps that are almost always running during these crashes include:

  1. OmniFocus
  2. Sparrow
  3. BBEdit
  4. Messages

I'm going to wipe and reinstall on Saturday and report back with my findings.

I haven't yet done the wipe/reinstall but I have more interesting findings to report.

Using gfxCardStatus I see that when the machine is using the discrete video card when connected to an external monitor. I have never had a kernel panic while the machine is using an external monitor.

When I'm using it out and about the machine defaults to the integrated video card to preserve battery life, as expected. I can force repeatable kernel panics by trying to launch PhotoBooth, with no other software running. The application won't launch, the machine freezes for a second and then restarts.

If I use gfxCardStatus to force the use of the discrete video card, and then try launching PhotoBooth, there is zero problem.

I suspect the crash happens when the machine tries to hand over control from one video card to another as evidenced by the "AGC GPU REGISTER RESTORE FAILED" warning in every Problem Report I've submitted. Now I have to determine if the issue is a corrupt file or a failing logic board.

The Mangelo

I had the same thing occur, but by installing gfxcardstatus and using that to select the card being used my problem seems to have gone away

I switch to discrete and leave it there, I can now shutdown normally and so long as I select one or other of the video cards its seems stable.

Mine would fail doing anything where the video switcher got involved even going into settings and turning auto off would crash the machine
