Unable to switch off 3G after swtiching off LTE in iOS 6.1 (iPhone 5)

After upgrading to iOS 6.1 (iPhone 5), I can only switch off LTE but cannot switch off 3G (which seems to be the only mode available when LTE is off).

Is this a limitation of iOS 6.1?

I would need to switch 3G off to conserve battery. The previous iOS version did not support LTE yet but supported switching 3G off.

I doubt

Same here, I'd like the 3G toggle back. Is there a feedback form to let Apple know?

The carrier has nothing to do with this, IMHO, there are still big parts without 3G in my country.

Yes, the carrier stil determines whether this feature is available.

I doubt this is dictated by the carrier because prior to upgrading to iOS 6.1, I had the 3G toggle. Now I only have the LTE toggle. For users who do not have stable 3G signals, this is quickly becoming a quite a pain.

It seems that it is the carriers that are actually responsible for implementing/removing the LTE/3G cellular data toggle.

I'm on Virgin UK, which uses the EE network. In iOS 6.0.2, the default carrier settings version for this network is T-Mobile UK 13.0. This version allows me to switch 3G on or off as I want. There is no LTE toggle.

If I were to upgrade to iOS 6.1, I think the default carrier file would then become EE 14.0, which replaces the normal 3G toggle with the newer LTE toggle.

I'd have the same problem, if I were to allow the carrier settings update to take place over the air.

I think it's a real pain not having the choice to pick which data network I want to use. Thereis no LTE where I am, so I'd rather have the choice to use 3G, when I need it, or 2G, when I don't.

I would be useful if Settings -> General -> Reset had an option to reset carrier settings updates, to overcome this problem. It'd also be nice if carrier settings updates displayed sufficient information to allow users to make a informed decision about whether they actually want to install the updates at all.

If I were to upgrade to iOS 6.1, the only way I can see of getting around this problem would be to downgrade to iOS 6.02, by installing the appropriate ipsw file, but Apple would then no longer provide support, would they?

Agreed I think the carrier settings dictate if the toggle will be 3G or LTE. For some carriers in other parts of the world I think there was never a 3G option and the LTE switch was the defualt when unboxing iP5.

What I would also love to have, along with thousands of current Apple fans, is the ability to have both toggles. i.e., being able to use LTE on demand and being able to not use 3G on demand as well. This functionality will definitley be helpful especially in parts of the world where 3G signal depends on one's location (e.g., city v. rural areas). Although in an ideal world battery life would be satisfactory and there would not be a need to switch 3G off regardless of signal stability.

Until such time that Apple allows this functionality (I hope you could fill out the feedback form as well) this is a painful limitation in iOS we have to endure.

As downgrading might not be the best option, I also restored my phone to factory settings and restored from backup. When the pop-up to update carrier settings appears I just choose no. I now have the 3G toggle back. Unfortunately LTE would have to wait.

Completely agree with you, bladddddd.

There really should be a toggle in the cellular menu to switch between LTE, 3G & 2G. Carriers in some parts of the world may well be switching off the 2G service, but that doesn't apply to everyone & certainly not where I am in the UK.

I spoke to AppleCare about my problem last month, but they were unfortunately quite hopeless, not knowing that the easiest way for me to recover my original carrier settings in iOS 6.0.2, would have been for me to carry out a full reset & restore from a backup. :(

I did too pass on my annoyance with the inability to switch back to 2G, should I want to, after an over-the-air carrier settings update has taken place & has subsequently replaced the 3G toggle with the LTE toggle.

I have also completed the feedback form some weeks ago. I hope others having this same issue will do this too:

Hopefully, Apple may bother to actually take some notice of this problem, which will now affect a lot of iPhone 5 users.

The next iOS update will hopefully include the ability to override a carrier settings update & falling back to a 2G signal, should users want to, or need to, particularly in order to reduce the strain on the battery.

Until such an update is released, I'm sticking to iOS 6.0.2 :(
