I had always thought that ethernet 'trumped' wifi connections. The network settings are 'automatic', but ethernet is at the top of the list.
Which must mean TC is communicating with wifi in preferemce to ethernet.
Ethernet is at the top of the list of networks.
I have noticed the same thing..
And yes, the device at the top of the list should win.. it really should.. but sometimes the alternative gateway offered by the wireless messes things up.
Why is the printer not working over ethernet? Do you have alternative routes on the wireless cf the ethernet?
If your computer has two different gateways try setting a static IP for wireless.. no gateway and no dns.. does that fix it?
You will have to give me a bit more info. Why you cannot print over ethernet??
My printer, an HP Photosmart, lives in the hall cupboard, 10'-15' away from the iMac. I print from it using an airport express, on the wifi network broadcast by the Time Capsule. Ethernet would make life easier but there's no room for it and I quite like having the printer hidden away. Perhaps turning wifi on/off is a price I have to pay for that, if the TC can't be relied on to prioritise ethernet.
I'll look at the option of setting a static IP for wireless and report back tomorrow - exhausted from exertions of restoring after the hard drive replacement (Aperture & iPhoto didn't quite work properly after the restore so have spent all afternoon trying to resolve that!)
If you print from the airport express which is tied into the TC, they should all be on the same network.. it is irrelevant if the wireless is used.. via ethernet you should still be able to talk to wireless printer without using airport in the mac.
Post the IP addresses they are both getting.. or try to ping the printer IP address with the airport off.
Well aren't I a dingbat?! All this time I thought it was the iMac talking to the printer directly via the airport express. Thanks LaPastenague!
So I can safely leave my wifi off on the iMac unless needed for something specific, and not have to worry about the Time Capsule connecting via wifi in peference to ethernet.
