My iTouch 5th generation is not restoring and is stuck showing the USB cable and iTunes icon

My iTouch 5th generation continues to show the USB cable pointing to the iTunes icon on my screen. I can’t seem to get rid of it. Also, my iTouch is not restoring correctly. I have pressed the “restore iPod” button and so far it does nothing, but restarts the process over again once it finishes. During the process of restoring my iTouch I keep getting “iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.” What does this mean and is this popup interrupting the process of restoring my iTouch? When this does popup my iTouch turns black and then goes back to the USB cable pointing to the iTunes icon screen. I have also tried to restart my iTouch by pressing the on/off button and the home button until the apple icon appears. I don’t know if this is relevant, but the screen with the red slider to turn the iTouch off does not appear. I have restarted my computer and I have also shut it off for about 10 minutes to see if I could get some results. It does not work. I’ve considered uninstalling iTunes and then reinstalling it again, but my MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.2 says that this cannot be done, because it is part of the system. I know that other people have been having trouble with their ipods not showing up on iTunes, but I do not have this problem. One more thing, I have recently updated iTunes to iTunes 11. Any suggestions?

Maybe:

Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)

Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .

Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Then try restoring on another computer.

Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I finally figured it out. My music library is on an external drive, which sometimes shuts off by itself after a certain amount of time. While I had changed my energy saver settings to 3 hours to accommodate the 2 hour time span that it took to restore my iPod and checked off the button that kept my computer from putting additional hard disks to sleep, my external was still shutting off. So, to counter this problem, I unplugged my external. My iTouch finished the restoring process without the interruption of the external shutting itself off. The USB cable pointing to the iTunes icon is gone and I am now able to access the applications on my iPod.

I have the same problem. I tried everything, but nothing happens. Updated to 6.1, turns on to recovery mode, download the software, gets recovery mode again, download the software and still nothing. Can't get to DFU mode 'cause brings me to iTunes and show me the recovery mode. I'm in another computer, but with the same issues. I bought online and I have no retail store near by me. I'm outside of US. What can I do?

While I was on my quest to get my ipod working again, I called Apple support for some troubleshooting suggestions. One suggestion that could help you is to ask someone if you could borrow their computer with a recently updated version of iTunes. The memory will be lost in the process when you connect your ipod to their computer, but hopefully it could solve the problem of being stuck in recovery mode. Another thing that could be giving you issues is that your computer could be interrupting the process of the recovery mode. Go to your energy saver preferences and change the settings. Sleep mode could be interrupting the process of recovery mode. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips, but I was attended all the process of updating. When finish to download, the iPod restarts and sudddenly brings me the recovery status. Started again with the download and nothing happens. It turns me again with the recovery stuff and repeats downloading. I starting to hate the USB and iTunes icon because is the only that appears, nothing else. 😟
