Printing from mini ipad to wireless printer

Has anyone managed to print wireless from the latest mini ipad to a Canon MP620 wireless printer? This printer I believe does not support AirPrint and it is situated upstairs but works fine wirelessly through a Netgear router to my eight year old wireless laptop downstairs. Iam not computer literate and so far my new ipad mini does not find this printer whatever app I have tried. I have read up on lots of sites but don't really understand what is needed. it appears that maybe the only way is to print via the laptop but can the ipad see the printer though the laptop? does the ipad have to be attached to the laptop? any help is gratefully received.

Thanks for your help everyone. I have now managed to print using both finger print and pro printer to the Canon pixma MP620 but have to go through the laptop running windows XP. do you know any way or app that would allow me to print wirelessly direct from ipad to the Canon without the aid of the laptop? i.e with the laptop switched off?
