My iphone 5, when I press mail, keeps trying to send 15 or 20 messages over and over. How do I get rid of these unsent messasges?

My new iphone 5 (I'm a new user too) keeps try to send 15 to 20 emails. I think it's always trying to send the same emails that I'm unable to send. It won't stop doing this every time I hit the mail icon. How do I get it to stop? Or, how do I delete those messages so they don't take up my time and space on the phone?
