I would like to use a Macbook Pro to capture some video from old tapes. Instead of using an external hard drive, could I simply capture the video to a SDHC card placed inside the computer? Are there any issues with doing that?

I don't think FCP would recognize the SD card as a capture device and even if it did, the card wouldn't be properly formatted for direct capturing.
You're best bet would be to capture to a properly formatted Firewire, eSATA or internal SATA drive, then transfer the files to the SD card afterward.

Just out of curiosity, I tried to set a card as a scratch disk…got all sorts of FCP warnings to disuade me.

Don't think there's any reason why you can't reformat the SDHC card to macosextended. Why not try it and post back and let us know. Not sure how fast the card reader is in a macbookpro.
