On my laptop (Macbook Air), Safari says the shortcut to get to my homepage (Google) is up+command+H, but when I press those keys, nothing happens except Safari gets minimized. What's the deal?? I never once changed the setting for shortcuts since I took this laptop out of the box.

Oh. Whoops. Sorry. Not sure how I missed the rest of your reply. So the Shift key is represented by an up arrow??
There is a (slight) difference. The shift key will look like a thicker arrow with double walls. Simislar to this:
