I subscribed to a magazine and the directions say it will download to Newsstand. I have an iPad 2 and there isn't that app on it. The mag went to my desktop and I have to sign in to read an issue. I searched for Newsstand but could not find where to download it or how to make it go to Newsstand if I had it.

What is the app? If a magazine app is Newsstand compatible, it should automatically appear in Newsstand.
What is the iOS on your iPad? I believe NewsStand appeared with iOS 5. If you need to upgrade, check out the Apple article below.

Sadly, we don't know if it applies, but it was worth a shot.
I don't know the version and won't until I use the iPad later, but I know another app said I needed 5.1 so I'm behind.
I read the link but it seemed to say I had to empty my iPad? Can't I upgrade like I do with Windows -- download a file and it updates? Is there a simple way to upgrade to the latest iOS?
Edit: Just researched quickly. Says I have to backup to my PC then restore. Can anyone give detailed directions?
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - along with other items - so make sure you backup first.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.

We covered all of this by transferring all purchased content into iTunes and by backing up the iPad - after the device is erased and the new iOS is installed - all of the content is restored to your iPad.

But if you have synced photos or imported music from CD's on your iPad, you will have to sync with iTunes again in order to get that back onto the iPad because iCloud only backups purchased content from the iStores.
Not to scare you even more - you have to totally erase the iPad in order to restore from the iCloud backup. That is the only way to get to the iCloud backup is by erasing and starting all over again.

If you are running iTunes 11 - you have to go to View>Show Sidebar from the menu at the top before you can see your iPad under the devices heading.

It mentions erase but it also states that iTunes will backup the iPad first. I am encouraging you to backup the iPad anyway and that's why I sent you the link that explains how to backup.

Since I am on iOS 4.3.3 I assume iCloud won't show up until I upgrade. I can't backup via Settings until I upgrade, too, since Backup isn't there.

Let's get to new questions: How can I backup to iCloud on 4.3.3? Backing up to my laptop is difficult so iCloud would be a help. I see if I upgrade it's a slam-dunk but on 4.3.3 I foul out.
That's an easy question to answer. You can't backup to iCloud until you update the iPad. I was just trying to provide as much information to you as I could with respect to the questions that you asked.
Pink... the bottom line is this, you are going to probably have to update your iPad at some point if you want to move forward with some of the apps that you want to use. I have tried to give you the knowhow... it is up to you to put it use now.
Ok, so I really have no choice but to connect via USB to my laptop, run iTunes, click Backup to this computer ... then update iOS. For that I'll have to read this again as I think I was given instructions. Again, no memory so I'm guessing.

I have 76 app icons. F those, none were purchased. I will assume that when I backup, there is a directory called Apps or something.
First I will read your links, then will try a backup, maybe tomorrow. Then I'll post.
Just read the link on updating. I am not comfortable doing it. Apps are not backed up. I don't sync which means I may lose stuff.

Sooo I can't sync to my laptop so can't backup to iTunes . I can't update so I can't backup to iCloud.
I am so confused. I am unable to backup until I update and can't update until I backup.
If you don't sync, you can still transfer the purchases. Just do not click on Erase and Sync. Click on Transfer purchases. Don't worry about updating iTunes yet, one step at a time.
Remember something about your apps, you can always download your purchased apps again in the purchased tab of the App Store after you update the iPad. You have to be running iOS 4.3.3 at least for that feature.
The most important things right now are transfer purchases and backup.
Like I said, none of my programs errr apps were purchased. So that's one thing I don't have to worry about *whew*

I feel the first way is the way to go. I just opened iTunes and see File, Devices. I can Sync and I can Backup. I don't see Erase. Where may that pop up at me?
I'll take baby steps. Backup first, and if successful (To verify that the backup finished successfully, open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. The name of the device will appear along with the date and time the backup was created.) then I'll be back to begin the learning process of updating iOS.
