New G5, Need to Test!

Ive had a PowerMac G4 MDD dual 1.33GHz for a while now, and I finally decided to upgrade to a G5. I know all the pros and cons to PPC's vs Intel, but I didnt want to spend $600~ on a first gen Mac Pro. Instead I got myself a fully functional (as far as I can tell!) PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5GHz model. It has dual 120GB HDDs in RAID 0, a Superdrive, 6GB RAM, and a Geforce 6600.

Anyway, my question was where can I obtain ASD 2.6.3 and AHT 2.5.2 to test everything to make sure it's all funtional 100%? Also, I tried googling it, but I cant seem to find out which is the last version of CHUD for the quad G5 that can use NAP mode like my MDD.

Help would be fantastic! Thanks guys!

Just for future info, you could have bought a Mac mini that would have left the X4 G5 and the 1st gen Mac Pro in the dust (not to belittle your buying decision, the Quad is a very nice machine).

Anyway, I would take a look at Macintosh Garden for AHT. If not, you might have to go to a local Authorised Reseller and see if they have AHT.

I didn't want a new Mac. I got the quad G5 on purpose, because its the last PPC Mac. Also, I don't mind if its slower because I already have an 8core gaming PC for my primary machine. This guy will be my toy :P

I found ASD 2.6.3 but it won't boot after burning it. Just sits at the spinning gear with apple logo and my g5 fans kick into turbo, then after like 5 minutes they slow down and then pick back up, all the while the DVD making sounds like its reading. Oh well! I still can't find AHT 2.5.2 though. I checked that Macintosh garden site and I didn't see it anywhere!

No it's not. The HD 4000 isn't as bad as you think, in fact it's more powerful than the GT630M.

The Apple Hardware Tests are machine specific, you might find something on eBay. Macintosh Garden has some AHTs, but it might not have 2.5.2. Also, be suspicious of certain sources *cough*torrents*cough*, I've had bad experiences getting AHT for my iMac G3 from torrents.

I found the CD online and burned to a disc and ran it. Every single test passed!

Then I ran the thermal calibration. All seemed okay

Ran the "yes" null test in Terminal with 4 instances running to max all 4 CPU's out at once, and left it running for a good hour. Checked my temps with Temperature Monitor, and they never once went above 64C/147F and the fans NEVER got any louder than the super quiet mode that it idles in. This sounds like fantastic news to me, or is that still really hot for 100% usage?

EDIT: Temps while web browsing are steady around 46C/114F, and idle is 38C-42C. So, 32C-64C temps are good? Sounds good to me at least! Such a steal for such a good working quad G5, so happy I bought it!

Well, at least my advice did help you out.. I have the 7800 GTX 512MB which is a PC card with Mac firmware. Yes, with 16GB of DDR2 memory and this card your performance could possibly outnumber the first generation Mac Pros.. Those are the 2006 models, esp the lower GHZ model 2.0 ghz and 2.66 ghz.

Actually, once you get into the Clovertown machines then your G5's performance won't match those Mac Pros. So, at best the 2006 Mac Pros you can beat 🙂

Make sure you have the SINGLE pump LCS.. those were the more reliable. The dual pumps are not so reliable. I used to own a G5 Quad with a dual-pump, but it died on me within 5 months of owning the machine. The single pump G5's came out towards the very end.. around May-August 2006.

The dual-pump G5 LCS overtime would gum a lot and cause disproportionate cooling of the CPUS which eventually could lead to LCS failure. I have never heard of or seen a single pump LCS burst or leak.

The G5 dual 2.5 from 2004, 2.7 from Early 2005 have been known to leak more than the Late 2005 Quad.
