That is probably the "orientation lock" (or "rotation lock") indicator. If you hit the home button twice to bring up the recently used apps list, then wipe to the left once, you should get the media player controls. The button on the far left should be the lock/unlock for the orientation. Just hit that button to unlock the rotation and the icon should go away.
