My Ipad wont pair with apple tv remote app, even though homesharing is working properly

My Ipad and Apple TV will not connect to the remote app.

I know that Homesharing is working, and that the Remote App recognizes that the Apple TV is there because the Apple TV icon appears on the Remote App home screen.

When I tap the Apple TV icon on the Remote App, the screen turns white and shows a message and perpetually tries to pair/connect with the Apple TV.

I have mirroring between the ipad and the Apple TV working as well. It is a mystery to me as to why the two devices will not connect through the remote app.

Any suggestions?
