In contacts all Groups are ticked and when I untick I still cannot access individual groups only the full list

Question

I have Macbook. iphone4s and iphone4 all synched on Icloud - since upgrading the phones all Groups are ticked and when I untick and say DONE I still cannot access the Group only the full alphabetical list. How do I cure this?

MacBook, iOS 6.1
