All of sudden, when I go to check mail, I am put into a different desktop. I have looked at 'Mission Control' and can see one window with Safari and another with Mail. If I click on the Mail window, I go to Mail but there is no 'x' to delete it which I believe I am suppose to find. How do I return so that I am using one desktop for everything?

Go to Mission Control and put the cursor over the desktop, which should cause the X to appear. You'll probably need to delete Desktop 2.

You won;t get an X on the very first desktop
I see now what the problem was. It wasn't mulitple desktops; it was that the Mail program was at full screen and so lost the top and bottom of the screen. When I returned it to normal screen, all is well.

as soon as you click on a (small) window you go to that app. To quit that app you should QUIT it and then it does not appear in Mission Control anymore. Quit via the menu of the App, or (when you are in it cmd Q)
