Q: Upgrade 1GB memory for Moutain Lion

I have a model iMac8,1 with 1GB of memory and want to upgrade from snow leopard to moutain lion. The desktop has a Intel Core2 Duo, 2.4 Ghz processor.

The memory module is listed as a 800 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM in slot 1 with slot 2 being empty. I saw some modules for sale but they are listed as SODIMM modules. Are they the same and does the correct module have 200 or 240 pins?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), IDVD 7.1.2

This is what you have:

Maximum Memory 6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots 2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM

Just be sure you purchase RAM that conforms to the above specifications. You can install a maximum of 6 GBs by installing one 4 GB and one 2 GB module. You can also install 4 GBs with two 2 GB modules.

You have an Early 2008 iMac, and you can see the memory requirements for your Early 2008 iMac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423?viewlocale=en_US#2

As you want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, I recommend you to install the maximum memory for your computer, in this case, 6 GB of memory. You can buy the memory in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400
