Stuck in Recovery mode 6.1. Honestly this is not good enough Apple

I got my son an IPAD 4 for christmas and he really liked it.

It crashed a couple of times this week and when it poped up saying he should update to 6.1 I said you may aswell.

This was over the wireless and it very quickly got stuck in recovery mode, After an hour of messing around and eventually removing the drivers and reinstalling the terrible Itunes app I was finally able to see the IPAD in recovery mode in Windows, What makes it worse is when I checked there was no backup since the one I did, manually, on Christmas day.

I did the restore and now it's exacly like a new IPAD, so at least it works; he is asleep now and will definately cry when he realises his photos, videos, games (esp tapped out simpsons) are all lost.

I know he regularly connects it to his laptop but in all that time it hasnt synced, I dont get it?

I am so annoyed.

If it never backed up when he synced it then most likely he was given a message that the backup failed, probably due to a permissions level, space restriction, encrypted backup file, or a few other possiblitlies.

Not sure what you are referring to as a "crash", but that would also indicate some type of problem and I would not have attempted an upgrade in that state. You can also check the updates present.

I know it is no solution to his photos, videos, etc but they would only have synced with whatever photo/video software you used. Or, if you use iCloud, the photos will be in the photo stream.

I know this may not help what has already be done or in this case, not done. But Apple provides built in features to keep your content saved in the event of software and hardware problems.

I suggest making yourself famaliar with the ipad and itunes user guide. Especially in regards to backing up your ipad to both itunes and icloud. You can replace just about anything, but not your data. Doing regular backups is your best friend when you need it, and once icloud is set up to back up, you shouldn't have to worry about it. (redundancy is key to backups).

I would suggest physically backing up to itunes every month or so. With icloud auto-back up enabled, it will back up everyday as long as ipad is connected to wifi.

Having more than one source for your backups and data is key to eliminating some of the frustrations that go along with the occasional 'crash'.

A potential catostrophic event could be a mere minor annoyance simply by being proactive.

Keep in mind, that anything you purchase or otherwise download from the itunes or app store, can be accesed and downloaded again (without being billed again).
