iPhone Contacts List

Where can I find my iPhone contacts that completely disappeared after I tried to connect to iCloud? If I recreate it, how can I ensure that it doesn't happen again?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 6.1, iMac computer with OS X 10.6.8
