Hi.  I participate in a chat that is hosted by Addon Chats.   Suddenly I cannot bring it up I get the message "Inactive Plug-in" and then it checks for "software updates" and says there are none.   I don't think I have Java 7 on but I have no way to tell.  I am not running lion.  Just OS 10.6, so I don't think it uses that.  Can anyone help me?  Someone said that I needed to do something in the Terminal to some code.  But I don't know what.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), also: iPod, Apple TV, iPad 2

Apple has blocked the Java web plugin for security reasons. You'll have to wait for an update. This will be a recurring problem. Network Java is inherently unsafe and should be eliminated from your workflow.

So, is their no way to access the chat?  Is there some other plugin I can use?   I am one of the moderators.  This happened suddenly.  On Tuesday I could get in and on Thurday I could not.  The chat is by AddOn:  http://www.addonchat.com/    (BTW,  I can still access it on my iPad, but it's very different there and too hard to navigate let along moderate.)

There is no way to access it on a Mac using Java. There is no Java on the iPad, so there must be an alternative interface that doesn't depend on Java.

The era of Java web applications is over. All web operators need to get off the Java platform as soon as possible.

Thank you Linc.  This was helpful.  I will copy this thread and give it to the AddOnChat website.   Hopefully they will make their alternative chat (the one they use for iPads) availabe for Mac and PC users!

    New information...

I just now went back to the Chat and tried to get in and when I got the notice saying java was disabled, I clicked on it and got a progress bar saying my computer was looking for a Java Updater.    Adn it found one!  It was called "updater 12"   I installed it, rebooted my browser, and i was able to get into the Chat.... I also  got this notification in the updater:

Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 12 delivers improved security, reliability, and compatibility by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_39.

On systems that have not already installed Java for Mac OS X 10.6 update 9 or later, this update will configure web browsers to not automatically run Java applets. Java applets may be re-enabled by clicking the region labeled "Inactive plug-in" on a web page. If no applets have been run for an extended period of time, the Java web plug-in will deactivate.

Please quit any web browsers and Java applications before installing this update.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5575 for more details about this update.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 for information about the security content of this update.

Thanks.  Actaully, the broswers just borrow the Java from the OS.  I had the same problem with Firfox, Safari, and Chrome.   But if you look at my last posing, you will see that Apple has a fix for this now.   Cheers.
