It's not lighting even under low light.

Which MacBook Pro do you have and what OS are you running, it says OS X (10.5.1)?
I don't see a light sensor by the camera. I have a late 2006, November to be exact, MacBook Pro 17". It's running Lion 10.7.5.
You tell me did your 2006 ever have backlit keyboard??
Late 2006 17-inch: 2.33GHz(MA611LL/A) did have the illuminated keyboard.
The built-in F-key functions are alternatives to the standard F1 through F12 keys. If you choose this option try the function key fn + F5 F6
I'm not sure if it did. I have the 17 inch Novemebr 2006 MacBook Pro. It is 2.33GHz. Where would I find the model number? The F5 key is for max sound and F6 is num lock.
The thing I find curious is that under system profile, keyboard there is a box for Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light. I thought the option would not be there if there was no keyboard back light.
Is the fn key box checked in that Keyboard preference pane?

I am showing the Late 2006 17-inch: 2.33GHz did have the illuminated keyboard.
The fn key box is checked. When I press fn the F5 the sound rises and fn + F6 locks numbers. Using F5 or F6 without the fn key does nothing.
I have two conflicting data sheets here so on 2006 2007 start date for backlit so

There is some talk of it being an option? But this spec sheet with your model indicates backlit.
I would take to the genius bar at your Apple store for further review.
Everything you've shared with me indicates this Pro should have a backlit keyboard. I tried reseting the SMC and still no backlight.
