I know one would be to enter time machine by clicking on the icon in the menu bar, another would be to look at the phisical files on the backup disk, but I need a third way. Any ideas?

There are a couple of Time Machine apps mentioned on Pondoni's TM page - http://www.pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html - see section A. I've used TimeTracker a number of times - it lives in my Utilities folder - quite nice and it's free.
