How to change country in App store

I've been fighting with this issue for over several days so I'd appreciate if someone could help me out here.

So I got my new iPad mini about a week ago. While registering it with the iTunes (or maybe App Store, I'm kinda drawing a blank here) it asked me to specify a country. My family originally is from Germany and I speak German, so just for the heck of it, I thought, what if I specify Germany? So I did. Everything installed OK, but then the time came for me to set up the app store to install some apps. And that's when I hit a brick wall.

When I go to App store a popup comes up telling me that some information needs to be entered. I click OK. It then brings me to a window where I'm supposed to specify my payment information -- credit card and such. So I do that. Mind you that I live in US and I specify my US visa card with my US address. When I click Next it tells me that I cannot use this card for this store. It drove me nuts! I even called my bank thinking that my credit card got hacked... they said it's in good standing.

Then if I log out and log back in, the app store has this option "View Apple ID", which I use and then it shows, Country/ Region -- Germany. I click it and it says, "Change country or region". I click it again. Then it says Store - Germany. I click it again and pick United States. Click next. Then confirm EULA, click Next. Now everything looks in English (before it was in German) and I select Visa and type my visa number and then my address and click Next. After which the spinner comes on and after a second or two I get this window (attached) that says,

"Your session has timed out. Please try again. Code: 5107"

I've been trying again since last week. How long am I supposed to keep trying to start using my new iPad????

PS. I am at a point of bringing it back to a store.... seriously!

My young daughter found a simple way of changing store in the blink of an eye but she's out playing.

Sometimes I get a message from web sites saying an app is not available on my country's store and would I like to switch to a store where it is available. I accept and get stuck in another country's store when my daughter isn't around and I have to try to remember how to get back "home".

Beware: adults should never leave their country in the absence of a responsible child ;)

I would like to draw the attention of the Apple guys to the fact that some people actually and perfectly legally lives in two different countries and have valid credit cards in both countries. There should be an easy and user friendly way of shifting between two apple stores on the iPad. Remember also that not all iPad users own a computer (my father for example). It should therefore be possible to do these things working only on the iPad.

Easiest way,MUST use USB wire to connect to computer's iTune.

(1) Connect your iphone/ipad to computer

(2) Make sure you sign in to iTune and first authorize the computer you are using [ie. Authorize This Computer].

(3) Click Store > View My AppID > Change Country or Origin

(4) Select the country you want, follow through all the instructions

This way should allow you successfully change the country default on your iphone/ipad account.

I don't know why it only works this way, but if connecting to computer's iTune will help you reduece frustrations, take some time to do it, it will save you hassles.

Perhaps you don't know this for ios devices (mine is ipad 3)

Touch:

Settings

iTunes and App Stores

Apple ID: myemailaddy@thingy.com

A window then appears with various options

View Apple ID

Sign Out

iForgot

Cancel

Touch Apple ID

Your account settings window opens

including :

Payment Information

and

Country/Region

When you touch Country/Region you get a message reminding you to enter details of the Credit Card you use in that country or it won't work.

I don't see any need to use a PC or Mac :o

I quote "Even if it did work it would be cumbersome to give credit card information every time you switch from one country to another"

If you want to shop in itunes or app stores in various countries, the rule is you must provide the information from a credit card for the appropriate country each time you swap country - whether cumbersome or not.

I quote more "I have a number of apps from different countries and I have to change country just to get an update", so you DID use a different credit card for each country. I suggest "it IS cumbersome" instead of "it WOULD BE cumbersome"

Apple unfortunately has to follow different countries' laws on copyright so I doubt they can do much about it. Still, we can always hope.

Do you really need to buy from different countries so often? I have found the search function to does not always find the app I'm looking for, even with correct spelling and when the app is in fact available in that country. Try using the developer's name if you can't find what you want using the app name.

Now, that is something Apple will probably manage to sort out :)

Thanks for the comments. When I use iTunes on my mac I don't need to provide the credit information every time. It can remember different credit cards. But then I need to sync. However, my parents use the iPad mini without a computer, so it seems to be a general problem.

I need to buy apps from different countries. The car navigation apps in Japanese can only be bought in the Japanese store, so I have no choice. When I am in Denmark I need a Danish (or at least) a European car navigation app. I don't see any copyright issues here. I use the Japanese app in Japan, the Danish app in Denmark and the Frensh app in France. The supply of Japanese language apps is very limited outside of the Japanese store.

I can appreciate your frustration.

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple's customer relations department employed someone to read through discussions and say something? For example "We recognise this is a significant drawback and are working on it. We do take international travellers' needs into consideration"

Dropping google maps and doing their own world mapping must be rather expensive, so ignoring the travellers' need to change store country easily would seem like leaving a rather big money wasting spanner in the works.

Amongst the people who move around the world are the business decision makers, including those who decide which tablet their organisation will invest in, n'est ce pas? Remember why IBM lost their number 1 position in the computing market? Etc. ;)

My problem is this. I bought my iPad in Australia (Oz) but have mpved to NZ. Eventually I have found out how to change countries. In Safari, log in to Apple account, hit the little country flag icon bottom right hand of page. Fab. I've updated for addresses and visa (debit) card info. All sweet. Except that it isn't. Every time I try to buy an app in iStore I enter password as normal but then am asked to enter password again and verify information. A box comes up, I enter my card info. Again. I hit done. No good.

I haven't entered a State! There are no states in NZ and I am only able to select an Australian state. But I have already changed countries. I do that, hoping against hope, error message comes up "unable to use this payment method". There are $$$ in the card account, that is not the problem. An Apple glitch is. I read on page 2 of this thread that it's not possible to make the changes with an iPhone (Apple being deliberately obtuse) so maybe it's the same for iPad? I have no computer, will have to use someone else's to find out... I know how jailbreakers feel...

If you choose iTunes and App stores in Settings etc (as I explained previously in this thread) and you choose NZ and enter your NZ Visa info, and you still don't succeed, you will have to phone your local Apple shop and ask for help (even if its nowhere near where you are).

I think you may have omitted a step in the procedure.

I still don't understand why, though, when we travel, we can buy from any ordinary shop in the world using whatever valid bank card we have and issued from any country. I am English, and even though I live in France with a French bank account, I would like to buy apps, films and books in English that are not available on the French iTunes or AppStore. I can't!

Perhaps a competent Apple porte-parole will give the reasons (probably legal issues) for not accepting orders for local products from travellers and ex-pats that don't have a bank account in every country they visit.

Thanks for your reply, Gimme6.

I've tried everything I'm able to. I even went into town today specially to use a non-mobile device, as someone said you can't do it on an iPhone. I only have an iPad, which of course is also on iOS. Others have said go to Settings ---> iTunes and App Stores, but I have no option of that kind. I have Settings ---> Store but that gives me no options to change what has been suggested.

I use iOS 5.1.1 and am not about to go to 6, as I read about the maps disaster and like maps.

I've gone to Apple Support and am waiting on their reply.

This situation should not exist. It's an Apple fcuk-up that I've paid big $$$ to experience. The one Appleid is required everywhere and so changing customer info. in one place should ripple through to the others or there should only be one place to change it.
