Your MacBook Pro is a version too early to use mirror even with ML. It just does not have the hardware. Airparrot works in a different way so can be used on pre-early 2011 MacBook Pro.
You should be able to airplay iTunes with Home Sharing on, just not the mirror bit.

It is a technical processor issue, any MacBook Pro before early 2011 (mid 2011 for all other Macs) does not have the power to do it. I believe Airparrot uses a software solution so it works with slightly older processors. I am not techie enough for the exact spec differences but know that is the layman's issue. I can mirror and have Airparrot, I prefer mirror but found AP perfectly good. Reflectorapp and Beamer have other solutions too but I have not used them.
