Why does podcast download exceed published size

I subscribe to several podcasts. I've noticed a trend recently where the podcast download list will show the size of the file is stated as a certain size - for example 447.0 mb - yet the download continues, one I'm currently downloading is at 620+ mb and counting. This has been happening with increasing regularity. Any ideas.

Update: happened in two of four downloads today.
