Hi,
In iChat > Preferences > Alerts is the place to set the Sound option.
The top item is a drop down, listing 18 different actions you can set sounds to (And speech and or AppleScript as well).
You can set something to Text Invite and also Message Received.
Are the sounds working in iChat ?
If they are working here then go to System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects tab.
Make sure the Sound Effects Volume is high enough compared to the Master volume.
This Preferences Pane controls the System Alert Sounds level (And the System Alert is set here).
There is a separate Volume control for the Alert Sound (Sound Effects) compared to the Master volume (Much like the way there is a Volume control within iTunes separate from the Master control).
NOTE:-
You can also Highlight a Buddy then do a "Get Info" (CMD and i keys together) and you see and info Card.
This also has Alerts (17 in this case) and you can set a specific Sound fro a Buddy this way.
Of course you can also set nothing.
This will override the "global" settings above.
