    Hi nandi,

To insert a cell reference in the condition you must click the cell reference icon (shown at the right end of the box in the third rule definition in my earlier post, then cick the cell to be referenced.

From the appearance of your first rule, I suspect you typed "B9" into the box. Numbers will interpret this as a literal value, not a cell reference.

In th second rule, I suspect you have clicked B10 without first clicking the cell reference icon.

To insert a cell reference, you must first click the cell reference icon, then click the cell to be referenced.

    Regards,

    Barry

Barry, is the cell reference icon the small square with 42 inside?

    cell inspector.png

Here are the steps Im taking

    test cell.png

click on square with 42 inside

    click on Show rules

clic on B9 (formula existing inside)

nothing appears in the the conditional formatting blank line or on the screen.

    thanks

    Nandi,

There is a differece between "Equal to" which tests Values and "Text is" which tests Strings. It looks to me as though you are testing text strings, so you should be using the "Text is" comparison type.

    Nandi,

The cell reference icon is circled in red below.

    Picture 2.png

Click the icon, then click the cell that you want the rule to reference.

    Thanks Jerry,

I have tried this, but I still cannot get the cell text to turn colors.

Barry showed me a cell icon but it is not showing in Numbers 8

Looking for another way to access the icon.

I was about to suggest that you must be using Numbers 08. It's time for you to upgrade.

There were many revisions made in th transition from numbers '08 to numbers '09. Apparently this was one of them.

My '08 experience has been pretty minimal. Sorry that I missed this difference. Perhaps it would have been useful to provide the version information earlier in the conversation.

I did put numbers 08 in the tags section of the first entry...but that was soooo long back in this thread.

Well I downloaded Numbers 09 and started playing around with it

Let me see if I can figure it out from all the help you both have kindly provided.

Either way I'll get back to you both here.

    Many thanks Jerry & Barry

I see that you did put Numbers 08 in the Tags section, but I missed it. I'm glad to hear that you made the upgrade choice. You won't regret it.
