Be careful...got an open service ticket and they were very pleasant, but no iPad for me this weekend.
Senior Tech said that this upgrade was causing numerous problems with iPad 2.
I will say that the upgrade worked like a charm on my iPhone 4s.

This happened to me too - I've been out of the use of my ipad2 for three days now. Did Apple Support say if and when a fix would be available? Have they acknowledged the problems on their website anywhere? Thanks in advance.
Apparently doesn't impact every iPad 2. Mine updated fine and is running without difficulty.
Cold comfort, but mine took the update fine too. Which probably makes it harder to narrow down because it's not a wide spread issue - widespread in every iPad 2 - rather isolated.

Using Apple Configurator to Prepare my attached iPad with the "latest" software fixed the problem for me, as per RavingWalrus' post above.

The result is that IOS 6.1 is now installed on my iPad 2.
Folks this works for anyone that can use Apple Configurator (sorry Windows, maybe someone else knows an equivalent Windows app). Mac people: I can tell you that you don't need Server edition to get and run Apple Configurator from the App Store.
