How do I use my trackpad to unlock a computer?

I have been using my friends macbook with OSX 10.8.2 installed on it and every time I use the command-L command to highlight the address bar, the screen locks up instead and prompts me to drag my finger in a pattern to unlock the screen. I don't know if this is a new mechanism on this OS but either way we've been forced to shut off his computer every time. Any ideas?

This SOUNDS like your "friends" (sic) computer has some third party software installed which has acquired the command-L as the locking shortcut. I would be looking to uninstall/deactivate this, or at least change its keyboard shortcut.

I'd be looking in the Applications or Utilities folder and/or System Preferences.
