No. Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the free space.

I tried this but I am not sure what to do once I have opened Disk Utility.
Click on the partition and then on the Erase tab.

I seriously do not see an erase tab.
Does anybody know where this Erase tab is????
Never mind! I figured it out! Thanks for yoru help, Niel.
Caveat: I'd strongly encourage anyone following this sequence to ensure there is a current and consistent backup of the disks here, as mistakes and bugs in Disk Utility.app can lead to data loss.
As for the erasure tab, launch Disk Utility.app from the Applications > Utilities folder. Select the target partition in the left navigation column. Select Erase from the top center of the right column. Then select the Erase Free Space... button.
