OSX ML is very slow to boot up and once booted keyboard is not working.
Sys Preferences is no longer showing an icon for bluetooth.
Tried a restore but can't type in password due to having no keyboard!
Any ideas how I can sort the problem?

Get a USB keyboard known to work with Macs. Reinstall may not work unless you have one.

Would the fact the bluetooth icon has disappeared from system preferences indicate a hardware fault?
Not necessarily. If there are no bluetooth devices it might also have a problem. Check the battery on all Bluetooth devices.
Yeah, changed the battery on the keyboard but no joy.
Have done a clean install of OSX but problem persists.
Still no Bluetooth icon in prefs and boot up is taking between 3-4 minutes.
Have tested the memory and thats ok.
Tried using Apples hardware test but holding D at start is not working (I'm using a usb logitech k120 keyboard).
Once booted everything else works fine so I'm assuming it's nothing serious like the logic board. Hopefully it's just a failed bluetooth module.
Why on earth the hardware test can't be included as part of the system is beyond me. Getting a tad fed up of all this hold down ctrl-p-q-r-tab-alt-del-space, whilst sticking a thumb up your a$$ 🙂

Actually, buried in the Apple site they mention about the additional protection given under EU warranty law. A minimum of 2 years. Bet they don't make that clear when pushing the applecare product!
There is no such thing as a "clean install." Do you mean you erased your hard drive, installed a supported operating system, and have not added any devices or drivers, and these issues began?
Installed from usb stick, erased hard drive, installed ML.
No devices or drivers added.
The issues began prior to the fresh install and continue after.
The slow boot, bluetooth icon not appearing in system preferences, and the apple keyboard not being discovered is the exact same issue prior to the reinstall.
Try double clicking Hard drive -> System -> Library -> PreferencePanes -> Bluetooth.prefPane. If it is gone, search for it with FindAnyFile.
FindAnyFile shows Bluetooth.prefpane in the preferencepanes folder.
There's also the bluetooth.plist file in the preferences folder.
Make sure it is in the one I mentioned. There is more than one.
Just double checked.
The one you mention is in Hd -> System -> Library -> PreferencePanes Folder
There is also one which is hidden (not visible using finder) in HD -> Library -> PreferencePanes
Double click the first one and see if it shows up.
