No system sounds after "deep" sleep

If my computer goes into "deep" sleep mode, upon wake-up, none of the system sounds work (chimes, swooshes, etc. like when I get a new email). There is nothing wrong with the sound in general, (e.g. iTunes; video)...but I get no system sounds. This doesn't happen when I shut the lid for a short period of time. Rebooting is only way to clear it up. Suggestions?
