How do I get my ipod to finish this update? What went wrong?
I tried installing the lastest update for my ipod, but when it was going to install it came up with this error message.

1638 is the error message
The message I get when I try to restore it is The Ipod "Ipod" cannot be restored at this time because the Ipod software update software server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable. I went on to do all the steps it says to do, uninstalling everything apple and reinstalling.

- Install the latest version of iTunes.

- Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. - Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
- If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. in that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

If I check for Apple Software Updates I get a message that reads "The Apple Software Server could not be found. Check your internet setting and try again" I never changed any settings at any time,
