2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2. It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe. The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue. I had to force restart the computer. Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board. Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card. This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Hey...

Why should us pay for Apple's fault?

An Ordinary PC can run robustly at least for several years... This time this problem it is definitely caused by Apple.

So why should us pay for it?

But I recommend those who are in Apple Care or warranted ...Go to replace your logic board now! once you met some problems about Graphic card,go and replace it!

Does anyone know how to retrieve the original AMD Radeon .kext extensions?

Like many of you, I had moved them to a folder to trick the macbook to use the integrated card. I moved them back to the original location and deleted my backup folder containing them (bad mistake) and now they do not appear to be showing in the Library/Extensions folder.

Here's my Library/Extensions folder:

Also, just wanted to say that I picked up my Macbook today after PS3 Specialist DOT COM (Khaled) reballed the GPU. I paid ~$200 USD (including shipping). Everything is good so far and discrete GPU is working fine. He only had my Macbook for around two days before he shipped it back to me so my computer was only gone for about a week. And he packaged it up well just like I had sent it to him.

It would have cost about $600 to get the logic board replaced here in Canada! I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a cheaper and more reliable alternative. Macbook still runs hot at times though so I will have to keep a close eye on it.I'm finished with Apple now. Next laptop will probably be a Lenovo and I'll be switching to Android phones as well.

Hi guys,

funny to see that the discussion is going as hot as the Graphic Card 😁.

I own MBP early 2011 2.2 GHz i7 with this famous Discret AMD HD 6750 and it began to go crazy for about 2 week from now.

I went crazy like all of you and wrote also to Apple to unload my anger. But yesterday i had the genius act. I opened my Laptop and looked inside.

Both fans were blocked with everything they sucked in.

So, one solution could be to clean the Fans.

Now it work perfectly silent and remain cool, and when the Discret Card is activated no problem encountered.

This computer is way too small inside for a good air circulation, so you have to avoid to place it on surface who block the air entry on the back.

That´s the main reason why the Discret Card break away. That´s also, maybe, the reason why a class action will go underground, because you will not be able to prove that you used your computer in the right way.

Servus,

Seb

I disagree,

I clean the fans on a regular basis and I still can't use my MBP to the fullest.

I just have to open an app that uses the discrete GPU and then it will crash...

Apple REALLY needs to acknowledge that this is a problem and it has to be fixed asap. Im on the verge of buying a completely new one and then hoping for a solution that will fix the Macbook so I can re-sell it.

PLEASE READ: I recently sent Tim Cook a thank you note, for helping me resolve a problem I had with my phone. Granted, I don't expect Tim himself to handle such things but he does have a team of support staff for these emails.

At the end of the email I linked to this discussion board and described the problem I am having with my Macbook, asking that Apple will consider a recall. I was VERY POLITE and friendly, and that's important.

I got a call back from a representative thanking me for letting them know of the matter and that they log every single incident such as mine. They currently don't have any plans for a recall, but this is because there are not enough points of reference to this issue. This thread IS NOT a source of reference. A source of reference is a person going into the store and talking to an engineer, a person talking to Apple support on the phohe, or a person sending an email to Tim Cook's staff describing the problem, *with a serial number*, hopefully also referencing a repair document if exists.

Thanks.

For those, who are having the problem with the GPU and still managing to run the affected mac in some way (maybe by not running heavy apps which need dedicated GPU) so that it only uses the integrated one, I'd suggest that it might be a good option to go to : https://bugreport.apple.com/ and report your problem with all the details.
Then the actual engineers at apple familiar to this issue might be able to identify the root cause and hopefully solve the problem as soon as possible.

Everybody makes mistakes, also engineers. Yet, if you pretend to sell a premium product and tag it with a premium price... Than step up, and fix it mr Apple...

For those who's "switch" is locked to "Discrete Graphics Card" at boot and can't get to boot from any drive... this works for me:

"Internet Recovery Mode"

Hold down Command+Option+r at startup until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen. (it takes a while to load...) You could run some disc diagnostics here to be sure thats OK... anyhow... even if you don't use any of the utilities, after restart you'll be able boot from any local drive again. Apperently it switches the graphics to the internal chip again. Until some app "thinks" it needs the AMD again.....

Please keep reporting this hardware error at the Apple engineers, and if you happen to know anyone in the media... please make him/her very happy with a good story by forwarding this 800.000+ views / 6500+ posts discussion without any official reply form mr Apple... yet.

Guy's... Thank's for all your replies and support. Very helpful!

I was facing the same as everybody. I had to replace the logic board on my late 2011 macbook pro which cost £500+ . Two weeks in the same problem started happening and I had to replace the logic board for the second time. Now I am worried that the problem will occur again. The warranty on the logic board is only for 3 months and it costs way too much for me to replace. I am only using my mac for professional use.

I hope Apple finds a way to fix this problem somehow. When I talked to them for the problem the reply I got was that they do not know why this is happening and that the only instructions they have is to keep replacing the logic board.

It won't last. The author of the article mentions he has done it 5 times already. This is known as a reflow and it has been discussed many times in this never ending thread. Not only it is just a quick fix, but you can damage your logic board by doing it and losing the rest of your components.

Attention MacBook Pro users!

i Had the exact same issue as all of you are describing. Grey lines and white screen of death. Genius Bar diagnosed it with failed logic board. No warranty or apple care, would cost $310 to fix. Genius Bar said there WAS a repair program for this video card issue. Told me to call apple care. I did, and mentioned the repair program, and they fixed my Laptop FREE OF CHARGE!

i Highly recommend you call apple care ( 1-800-APL-CARE ) to get this done (speak to senior adviser)

I live in California. It is not a official recall, but if you tell them that there was a program once for these video cards that is no longer valid, they will probably replace it for you for free. You should tell them that you have done research and this is a widespread issue on the Internet. The advisor I talked to said that he already knows that there is a big issue with these video cards, but there is no official recall for them. Apple is probably being careful to be nice to all of these complainers, so they don't cause widespread anger and are forced to host a recall campaign.
